Manchester United are getting ready to make a bid for Germany and Bayern Munich right-back Philipp Lahm.
According to a report in Kicker, United are looking to shore up their backline by signing the influential 26-year-old.
Lahm was impressive in the World Cup as he captained his young side to a semi-final appearance. Although only in his mid-twenties, he is already a veteran with a wealth of domestic and international experience to bank on.
It is reported that Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed by the German when Manchester United were beaten by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals last season and has had an eye on him since then.
United are looking to bring in a replacement for the ageing Gary Neville - whose weary legs were a liability for the Red Devils at various points in the season.
Rafael da Silva, touted as Neville's successor at Old Trafford, still lacks the experience to perform at the highest level on a consistent basis.
In fact, the 20-year-old endured some torrid matches last season - none more so than in the game against Bayern Munich when he could not handle the slippery Franck Ribery and was sent off.
Lahm has age, experience and undoubted pedigree on his side - something that Ferguson would need as he seeks to wrest the Premier League crown back from Chelsea.
